Some Safe Trading Tips
Background Check of Your Business Partner
Ask your trade partner to provide their company registration information. These are public records in some countries and you can check with the company registry in the partner's country to ensure that the company exists with a valid registration. If you cannot have your partner's registration information directly, ask your partner to provide you with a Certificate of Good Standing issued by the company's registry of his country or state/province. You can also gain further knowledge about your business partner by ordering a credit history report from a local credit agency.
Confirm Contact Details
Always confirm and verify that the address, phone number, fax number and email address given to you by your trading partner exist and belong to the same company.
Meet Your Partner Whenever Possible
Meet your business partner in person whenever possible and visit their company's facilities. There is no substitute for a face-to-face contact.
Protect Yourself When Ordering or Providing wholesale Samples
As a buyer, order a sample before making a purchase order to be sure that the product meets your expectations. As a seller, request payment for a sample and/or payment for shipping costs before you send out the sample, especially if your product has a high resale value.
Payment Risk Protection for wholesale Seller
If you are a seller and do not know your buyers very well, avoid selling your products on open-account and extend credit to your buyer. Instead ask your buyer to open a Letter of Credit (L/C). However, this document can be forged also. Always contact the credit agency that issues the L/C and check the L/C details so that all the information is correct including L/C number, name and address of the issuing credit agency, shipping date, loading and unloading port, applicant, amount of payment etc.
Payment Risk Protection for Buyer
If a supplier wants a deposit before he accepts the order, make sure you have done adequate background checks on the supplier before you send the deposit, or ask for a different form of payment, such as a Letter of Credit. If the seller seems more focused and eager on payment than any other issue, more caution should be given to this kind of transaction. Be extra cautious when the seller asks you to send money to an account whose real owner cannot be traced. For example, you can not trace the real name of the person behind an account with a wiring service such as Western Union.
Use Pre-Shipment Inspection Services
To protect against poor quality of goods, a buyer can order a pre-shipment product quality inspection and demand such inspection as a condition to payment.
Regions of High Scam Risk
Be cautious to conduct business in regions with high reported incidences of online fraud such as Eastern Europe, Western Africa and Central America.
